Aperture Photometry Uncertainties assuming Priors and Correlated Noise

چکیده

We derive a general formula for the noise variance in the flux of a source estimated from aperture photometry assuming (i) prior pixel-flux uncertainties are available for the image (e.g., computed a priori from a noise model), and (ii) noise is correlated amongst pixels. Correlated noise usually occurs in re-sampled and interpolated images (e.g., mosaics), with the degree of correlation depending on the size of the interpolation kernel. The smoothing kernel moves noise-power from high to low spatial frequencies and therefore needs to be recaptured to properly quantify the uncertainty in the flux summed over a region. Ignorance of correlated-noise will lead to an underestimate of the final aperture-flux uncertainty. The 1-σ uncertainty is given by the square root of the variance expression below. A formalism for estimating uncertainties when one does not have access to priors and is content on ignoring correlated-noise is described in: http://web.ipac.caltech.edu/staff/fmasci/home/wise/ApPhotUncert.pdf

The TAOS Project: High-Speed Crowded Field Aperture Photometry

We have devised an aperture photometry pipeline for data reduction of image data from the Taiwanese-American Occultation Survey (TAOS). The photometry pipeline has high computational performance, and is capable of real-time photometric reduction of images containing up to 1000 stars, within the sampling rate of 5 Hz. The pipeline is optimized for both speed and signal-to-noise performance, and ...

On the Optimization of Broad-band Photometry for Galaxy Evolution Studies

We have derived the uncertainties to be expected in the derivation of galaxy physical properties (star formation history, age, metallicity, reddening) when comparing broad-band photometry to the predictions of evolutionary synthesis models. We have obtained synthetic colors for a large sample (∼9000) of artificial galaxies assuming different star formation histories, ages, metallicities, redden...

A Proposed Pixel-Error Model for WISE Image Data

We derive a model for the noise variance in observed (down-linked) value for an image pixel. This will be used in the WSDS instrumental calibration pipeline to initiate uncertainties. These will be propagated and updated downstream for every pixel, and stored in image frames to accompany the primary singleframe products. These uncertainties will be used to assess expected versus actual detector...

Parameter Estimation from Time-series Data with Correlated Errors: a Wavelet-based Method and Its Application to Transit Light Curves

We consider the problem of fitting a parametric model to time-series data that are afflicted by correlated noise. The noise is represented by a sum of two stationary Gaussian processes: one that is uncorrelated in time, and another that has a power spectral density varying as 1/ f γ . We present an accurate and fast [O(N)] algorithm for parameter estimation based on computing the likelihood in ...

Measuring Type Ia Supernova Distances and Redshifts From Their Multi-band Light Curves

The distance and redshift of a type Ia supernova can be determined simultaneously through its multi-band light curves. This fact may be used for imaging surveys that discover and obtain photometry for large numbers of supernovae; so many that it would be difficult to obtain a spectroscopic redshift for each. Using available supernova-analysis tools we find that there are several conditions in w...
